What is Dexa scan?

Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) or bone densitonmetry is a fast, simple and easy examination to evaluate your bone mass. A DEXA scan measures bone density by using an enhanced form of x-ray scanning technology.

What does a DEXA SCAN determine?

A dexa scan is used specifically to assess a patient's risk of fracture by detecting osteporosis of the vertebral bodies, which is a thinning of the bones as we age and a possible source of back pain.

Bone density testing is strongly recommended if you:

are a post-menopausal woman and not taking estrogen.
have a personal or maternal history of hip fracture or smoking.
are a post-menopausal woman who is tall (over 5 feet 7 inches) or thin (less than 125 pounds).
are a man with clinical conditions associated with bone loss.
